As a result, Alsatians confronted not only the usual social and economic faultlines, but a
series of cultural divisions as well. Secondly, despite the relatively late transformation of Alsace from a pays réputé
étrangé to an integral part of France in 1789 and their Germanic heritage, Alsatians identified as Frenchmen. At the
same time they interpreted national events such as the revolution of 1848 in light of their local experience and collective
memory of the revolutionary and Napoleonic period.
